What Makes EVA Different

Exceptional Village Academy isn’t a typical online high school. We’re a private school with a homeschool heart—personal, flexible, and intentionally designed for students who learn differently. With a maximum school enrollment of 50 students, EVA has naturally small class sizes to focus deeply on each learner’s unique style and pace. This individualized approach allows us to nurture strengths, support challenges, and create a learning experience that truly fits.

At EVA, we don’t use standardized tests, and we don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to learning. Instead, students complete simple diagnostic check-ins in math and language arts so we can see exactly where they are and where they’re ready to grow. From there, we build a personalized plan with just-right skills and clear next steps. We meet each student where they are, set meaningful goals together, and provide steady feedback that helps them build confidence and real-world skills along the way.

Our classes meet live on Zoom, but they don’t feel like big online lectures. They feel small. Students talk. They ask questions. They’re known. Each day is short and focused, usually one to two hours, so learning stays intentional and students still have time to rest, explore their interests, or work through assignments at their own pace. At EVA, the goal is simple. Every student should finish the year stronger, more confident, and more capable than when they started.

At EVA, we create a space where students who have felt overlooked, misunderstood, or pushed aside in other schools are taken seriously. We talk honestly about history, culture, and real life. Students are not asked to shrink their identity to fit into a system. They are challenged, supported, and respected as they are.

Our Difference at a Glance

  • Short, Focused Days: Live Zoom classes last only one to two hours for deeper, more personal learning.

  • Live and Self-Paced Options: Students learn live each day with the founder or independently with continued support.

  • Small Class Sizes: Our sessions are interactive, relational, and designed to make every learner feel seen.

  • Learning That Understands You: At EVA, we don’t expect students to fit a system. We shape the system around the student, offering support, flexibility, and personalized strategies that help every learner thrive.

  • Creative Electives: From art and culinary projects to media and theatre, students create and share their work each week on Sharing Day.

  •  Multiple Paths, Shared Purpose: Learning is personalized. Some students prefer structured guidance, others work independently, and many combine both.

Support Classes for EVA Enrolled Students

At Exceptional Village Academy, students are not expected to figure things out alone.

Our Support Classes strengthen skills, build confidence, and provide structured guidance in a live Zoom environment. Each class serves a distinct purpose while working together to support student growth.

Language Arts Support

Language Arts Support begins with understanding where a student is right now. We use each student’s IXL diagnostic results to identify which skills need strengthening.

Students work on the exact areas their diagnostic highlights. Instead of reviewing everything, we focus on what each student truly needs, so time is used wisely and progress feels steady and real.

In this class, students:

  • Strengthen reading comprehension

  • Improve grammar and sentence structure

  • Build vocabulary in context

  • Develop clear, organized writing

Growth is tracked through strand improvement and writing development over time. The goal is steady progress and growing confidence.

Math Support

Math Support is guided by each student’s IXL diagnostic results, which show the specific math concepts that need attention.

Students focus on the areas that need reinforcement, whether in algebra, geometry, number sense, or financial math. We slow the thinking down in a healthy way so students understand the why behind the math, not just the steps.

In this class, students:

  • Strengthen foundational skills

  • Practice problem solving strategies

  • Reinforce current coursework

  • Build deeper conceptual understanding

Growth is monitored through strand progress and increasing independence in solving problems. The focus is clarity, confidence, and consistent improvement.

Learning Lab

Learning Lab is a structured support class centered on reflection, accountability, and growth mindset.

This school supports students who may struggle with executive functioning, focus, or follow through. Learning Lab creates a space where those challenges can be discussed openly and without judgment.

Each week begins with a guided reflection prompt and class discussion about what happened during the week and what students are learning. After discussion, students write in detail about their own experiences, strengthening clarity, organization, and written communication skills.

Students also complete a Learning Log, a weekly record of the academic work they have completed. This reinforces accountability and helps students see clearly what they have accomplished each week, building awareness of their effort and consistency over time.

Study Hall

Study Hall is a supervised Zoom work period for students who need to know someone is right there when questions arise. Students use this time to work on missed or overdue assignments, complete current coursework, or stay on track with weekly expectations. The teacher is present to provide guidance, answer questions, and occasionally offer short tutoring support when needed.

Study Hall provides structure, reassurance, and real-time assistance so students can move forward instead of feeling stuck.

Sharing Day

Independent Electives at EVA give students the opportunity to explore a personal interest during the week in a self-directed way. Students choose an activity or project to work on independently, allowing them to develop responsibility, time management, and follow-through while doing something meaningful to them. On Sharing Day, students present what they worked on and respond to a reflection question about their experience. This process helps them practice speaking skills, think more deeply about their learning, and build confidence as they share their progress with the community.
